Top tips for deciding between two quality candidates

If you’re lucky enough to find two high quality candidates, choosing which one to hire can feel impossible. At Nicholas Howard we know that recruitment isn’t rocket science, follow our top tips for recruiters and make the right decision!

Think long term

The recruitment process can be time-consuming and expensive so ideally you don’t want to have to do it over and over again for the same role. It’s important therefore to think about the future when deciding which candidate to hire. Which candidate has a wide range of skills and the capacity to grow and develop along with your business? Do they have leadership potential?

Consider your company culture

Company culture is the DNA of your business, it’s made up of the goals, vision, values and personality of every employee. Finding a candidate that fits with your company culture is crucial to keep your business running smoothly.

Get creative

Nowadays we find that businesses are more invested in finding ‘who’ they want rather than ‘what’ they want. Try focusing some questions on how the candidates conduct themselves and what makes them who they are. Great examples of creative interview questions might include:

  • What has been your proudest career achievement to date?
  • If you were hiring for this role, what skills would you look for in prospective candidates?
  • What’s your favourite aspect of your current job role?

Creative questions such as these will help you to get a better, more rounded judgement of how the candidate may conduct themselves and how they’ll fit into your company. We’ve also found that more inventive questions display an interest in the candidate and help to communicate to them how important people are to the structure of your business.

At Nicholas Howard, we’ve been working with businesses to help them hire the right candidates since 2009. Our client specific approach means that we intrinsically understand the people you’re looking for, rather than just the skills you require. Get in touch today to discover how our thorough and unique approach to recruitment could help you and your business!
