Starting the job search as a graduate

Beginning the job search as a graduate can be daunting. If you’ve recently completed your degree, you might be preparing yourself for some time off to enjoy a great summer or getting on the job search to start your dream career.
Not everyone’s experience of job hunting will be the same, and while some of your friends might have landed their ideal graduate job, others will spend months searching for the right opportunity.

Whilst finding a job that matches your skills might be high in your priorities, it’s crucial to not put too much pressure on yourself to find something permanent too quickly. If you rush the process, you might find that you end up with a job that isn’t quite right for you or your skill set.

Here’s our advice on starting the job search as a graduate:

Write down your skills

Write down a list of skills you’re great at and what you really enjoy doing and work on finding a job that matches this list. It might not necessarily be a job that your degree specialised in, but if you can show that you have a willingness to learn and determination to succeed, you’ll be sure to catch an employer’s attention.

Don’t compare yourself to others

If you’re spending your time checking social media regularly throughout the day, it’s highly likely that you’ll come across posts from peers who are celebrating their latest graduate job offer. Being regularly updated with this information makes it difficult to not compare yourself to others and feel like you’re behind. Try to remember that everyone’s paths are different and what might be a suitable position for them, won’t be for you.
Why not contact your peers and ask them for advice on how they got offered a position? You might learn some valuable tips that could land you your next job.

Sell yourself

Employers want to know what you can bring to a company, so don’t sell yourself short when writing your CV or cover letter. Think about the skills that you have picked up during your time at university such as teamwork, presentation skills, research, working to deadlines and logical thinking. You can use these skills to promote yourself, even if your degree subject isn’t relevant to the industry you’re applying to.
