Five sentences your interviewer doesn’t want to hear
We know that in a job interview when the stakes are high, it can be easy to slip up and say
the wrong thing. Most interviewers will take the high-pressure situation into account and be
understanding. However, there are still some sentences you should avoid. Trust us, your
interviewer doesn’t want to hear any of these!
1. ‘So what does your company do?’
While most businesses won’t expect candidates or even new employees to understand
everything about the company it’s important to do your research before your interview. A
good general rule to follow is, if you can answer your question with a quick internet search,
don’t bother asking it. It’s a waste of everyone’s time to ask boring questions when you could
be talking about your experience, skills and qualifications and learning in-depth information
about the business. Showing that you’ve done your research will show you’re passionate
and enthused about the role you’re applying for.
2. ‘I want a new job because I hate my current boss’
Discussing how you hate your current boss or manager in an interview is a huge red flag to
any potential employers. Even if you’re completely justified in your complaints, they have no
place in a job interview. You’ll come across bitter and negative.
3. ‘My biggest weakness? I’m a workaholic’
While it’s tempting to portray yourself as the perfect employee, it’s unrealistic and can make
you appear arrogant. Interviewers appreciate it when candidates display humility. Admit your
flaws but explain how you overcome them so they don’t negatively affect your work.
4. ‘I’ll need a week off in May’
There’s absolutely no need to discuss holidays in an interview unless you are specifically
asked. It will make you appear presumptuous and unprofessional.
5. ‘I don’t have any questions’
If you don’t have any questions to ask it can suggest to a potential employer that you’re
