5 questions you should ask a candidate’s references

After an extensive recruitment process you think you’ve found the perfect candidate, all
that’s left to do is contact their references. We know it can feel awkward and often you aren’t
sure what to ask, that’s why we’ve compiled a list of 5 questions you should ask every
candidate’s references.

What were the candidate’s primary responsibilities at your organisation?
This simple question will demonstrate to you how similar the candidate’s previous role was
and whether it will have provided them with the appropriate skills and experience to fulfil the
position at your company.

What are the candidate’s strengths and weaknesses?
You’ve probably asked the candidate about their strengths and weaknesses during the
interview process. However, we’d recommend asking their references this question. You’ll
be able to get a better idea of how self-aware the candidate is by the similarity of the
answers.

What’s one of the candidate’s most memorable accomplishments while working with
you?
In our experience what makes a candidate a truly valuable addition to your team is whether
they regularly take initiative and go above and beyond the call of duty. Asking this particular
question is a great way to get a measure of this.

What type of work environment do you think the candidate will most likely thrive in?
We often tell clients during the recruitment process that it’s just as important to find out
whether your company is the right fit for your candidate as finding out if the candidate is the
right fit for your company.

Would you rehire this candidate?
This might seem like an obvious question but it’s a great way to judge how enthusiastic the
reference really is about the candidate. Ideal answers include ‘absolutely ‘ and ‘definitely.’
